The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) has inaugurated a 6.3-megawatt solar power plant in the Comoros, funded with AED 25.7 million (US$7 million).

This project strengthens the country’s energy infrastructure, addressing rising power needs and supporting economic progress, while also reflecting ADFD’s dedication to sustainability and environmental responsibility.

It aligns with the UAE’s international development agenda and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), showcasing a joint commitment to expanding renewable energy access and boosting long-term resilience in partner nations.

The plant now supplies clean, dependable electricity to Moroni, the Comorian capital, and surrounding areas, helping reduce fossil fuel reliance, cut emissions, and enhance residents’ quality of life.

President Azali Assoumani of the Union of the Comoros led the inauguration ceremony, joined by Jumaa Rashed Al Remeithi, the UAE’s Ambassador to the Comoros, and officials from both governments.

Praising the partnership, President Assoumani noted that the UAE has consistently led efforts in renewable energy and climate action. He commended ADFD’s role in advancing sustainable projects that support global environmental goals and deploy innovative technology to broaden clean energy access.

He emphasized the transformative nature of the project, stating that collaboration with ADFD has advanced the country’s development goals and strengthened its environmental commitments. According to him, the solar plant is more than an energy source—it marks a key step in the nation’s shift to clean energy, contributing to economic stability and job creation.

Ambassador Al Remeithi highlighted that the project underscores strong UAE-Comoros ties and the UAE’s dedication to sustainable growth. He described the initiative as a vital stride toward environmental resilience and a testament to the UAE’s leadership in climate action and renewable energy collaboration.

Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi, ADFD Director-General, described the solar plant as a landmark for the Comoros’ economic and social development. He affirmed ADFD’s commitment to clean energy investments that deliver long-term environmental and developmental benefits.

Al Suwaidi emphasized that renewable energy plays a central role in promoting stability by reducing fossil fuel dependence and emissions. He said ADFD prioritizes energy sector investments to help secure sustainable, stable futures for developing nations.

The new solar plant connects to the national grid through medium-voltage lines, providing consistent electricity to the region. It reinforces ADFD’s long-standing cooperation with the Comoros, which includes AED 439.4 million (US$119.6 million) in concessional loans and grants since 1979 to develop energy, healthcare, education, and transport sectors.

By expanding clean energy infrastructure, the project advances SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), fulfilling ADFD’s global mission to promote sustainable development.
